about

Hi Friends!

This official release of Afterthought as a stand-alone track comes as a bit of a surprise.

As The Currawongs have previously done to mark the five-year anniversary release date of previous album and EP releases, it’s now time for the October 2016 EP volte-face to receive the same treatment.

The four tracks that comprise the volte-face EP were recorded, mixed and mastered in the space of three or four sessions – very fast by The Currawongs standards! During the sessions for this EP I ran out of time to record the title track volte-face, with a call being made to scrap the track early on during the sessions.

Fast-forward five years to October 2021 and a combination of work, life and general lethargy has once again foiled plans to record the track to mark the five-year anniversary of the EP, so once again it has failed to see the light of day. Maybe I’ll get a chance to record it in time for the 10th anniversary of the EP in October 2026!

In an attempt to do something to mark the five-year anniversary of the volte-face EP release I decided make a video for Afterthought. For an instrumental, this track in one of my favourite recordings by The Currawongs so it was an easy choice to make a video for it.

Because the Afterthought video was so much fun to make I decided to release the track as a single today - five years to the day after the volte-face EP was released in 2016.

The video’s theme of storm clouds forming throughout the video was inspired by recent wild weather events throughout parts of Queensland during the past fortnight. I also tried to incorporate as much currawongs footage into the video as possible. Not only because the track contains many field recordings of currawongs which were slowed down to give an eerie vibe to the track, but also too because currawongs are sometimes referred to as ‘storm birds’ or ‘rain birds’.

Thanks heaps for taking an interest, watching the video and having a listen.

Enjoy!

Ross.
